The Institute of Engineering (IOE) is one of the top and oldest technical institutes in Nepal. The IOE was founded in 1930 and is currently located in Pulchowk, Lalitpur. Following the introduction of the New Education System Plan in the country in 1972, the IOE was formed under Tribhuvan University.
IOE began bachelor's courses in engineering in 1978, master's courses in 1996, a doctoral program in 2003, and a postdoctoral program in 2018. Currently, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs are run in fifteen campuses/colleges. PhD programs are conducted at the IOE, Pulchowk Campus. Master's and bachelor’s courses are offered at the Thapathali Campus, Purwanchal Campus, Paschimanchal Campus, and Chitwan Engineering Campus. The IOE is now delivering its services through five constituent campuses and ten affiliated colleges. The IOE is planning to establish two constituent campuses in Gorahi, Dang, Lumbini Province, and Doti, Sudurpaschim Province.

The programs and courses offered by the institute have the flexibility to evolve and change in response to new requirements. They serve the dual purpose of building a solid foundation of knowledge and enhancing confidence, creativity, and innovation among students. The Institute of Engineering offers PhD programs, master's degree (graduate) courses, and bachelor's degree (undergraduate) courses in different engineering disciplines across various campuses and colleges. PhD Program
PhD-level courses are offered only at Pulchowk Campus, Pulchowk. Altogether, 55 candidates have earned their PhD degrees out of 188 enrolled PhD candidates at the IOE, and nearly 101 candidates are still pursuing their PhD research.

The main policy of the IOE is to enroll qualified students through a computer-based entrance examination system.
Selection Process
After the computer-based entrance examination, the Entrance Examination Board of IOE will publish the list of successful candidates on the entrance examination notice board and on the website, whereas the Admission Committee of the constituent campuses will oversee the admission procedure.
• Candidates who have met the program entry requirements will be selected for admission based on a merit list prepared according to entrance examination scores.
• The admission committees of the respective campuses will publish the admission list according to their schedule. Candidates should contact the Campus Admission Committee. All selected candidates should follow the schedule published by the committee. Vacant seats resulting from the failure of any candidate to enroll within the prescribed time will be filled by admitting candidates from the next consecutive list.
The evaluation system of the IOE includes both practical and theoretical components. To evaluate students' achievements, the IOE conducts assessments and semester examinations.
